Internet Computer Typewriter Policy

The Jericho Public Library is committed to remaining in the forefront of providing excellence in educational, informational, cultural and recreational enrichment in the service of all members of the community.

In keeping with this mission and with advances in information technology, the Jericho Public Library provides Internet/computer/typewriter access.

It is the policy of the Jericho Public Library to restrict the use of the Internet/computer/typewriter to patrons having a valid library card from the Jericho Public Library or a valid library card from another member library of the Nassau Library System. Acceptable identification for residents outside of Nassau County includes a driver’s license, library card, passport, etc. Each user must have his/her own valid library card or other acceptable identification as outlined above. Identification from a friend, or other family member will not be accepted.

Patrons will be shown how to get the computer up and running. Library staff members are not experts and cannot offer extended instruction in the use of the Internet/computer/typewriter.

The Internet/computer/typewriter user agrees to take proper care of all equipment, disks, manuals and other property of the Jericho Public Library. The user agrees to pay replacement costs of any equipment or materials lost or damaged as a result of negligence or abuse.

The Jericho Public Library makes no guarantees, either expressed or implied, with respect to any equipment, programs, or other library material, or their quality, performance, or fitness for any particular purpose. All materials and equipment are of a “demonstration” nature and are given for use “as is.” The ENTIRE risk as to the quality and performance of computer equipment/programs/documentation is with the user. In no event shall the Jericho Public Library be liable for actual, incidental, or consequential damages in connection with, or arising from, use of equipment, programs or other materials.

Only one person may use an Internet/computer/typewriter at a time. Use of the computer will be limited to one half hour periods per day unless no one is waiting to use it. The Internet/computer/typewriter will be available until one half hour before closing.

All decisions as to the use of the computer and other Library materials are at the sole discretion of the Librarian-in-Charge.

Use is limited to programs installed on computers by the Library.

No private files may be stored at the Library or on Library media and any data lost as a result of faulty media, programs, etc., upon data storage is not the responsibility of the Jericho Public Library.

The Internet is a global electronic network that provides dynamic resources and facilitates communication. Library staff cannot control access points that often change rapidly and unpredictably. Users are hereby notified that they are responsible for the choice of sites that they visit.

User agrees to observe all copyright laws. User agrees not to duplicate any computer programs or documentation provided by the Library.

The Library is a forum for all points of view and adheres to the principles of intellectual freedom as expressed in the Library Bill of Rights formulated by the American Library Association.

As with other materials, restriction of a child’s access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

The Jericho Public Library makes no warranty, expressed or implied, for the timeliness, accuracy or usefulness for a particular purpose of information accessed via the Internet.

Activities that are specifically prohibited include but are not limited to:

• attempts to circumvent or breach workstation, network or host security within the Library or at other Internet sites or to otherwise compromise the operation of or access to these systems or resources
• use of the Library’s computer resources for personal commercial profits
• use of Internet accessible resources that violate intellectual property rights of the owner or creator of the information or violate other local, state, or federal laws.

Out-of-district residents are required to abide by the same regulations guiding Jericho School District residents in usage of equipment in the Library.

New York State Education Commissioner’s Regulations permit Jericho Library cardholders to have preference in the use of the Internet/computer/typewriter. Should a Jericho Library cardholder require access to the Internet/computer/typewriter in use by an out-of-district resident, the out-of-district user must relinquish the Internet/computer/typewriter. Failure to do so may result in the suspension of Internet/computer/typewriter privileges at the Jericho Public Library.

The Director has the right to suspend privileges based on the failure of a patron to adhere to Library policies.

If the patron wishes to appeal the decision, the patron has the right to appeal to the full Library Board.

Use of the Internet/computer/typewriter presupposes that these rules and guidelines have been read and understood by the user and that the user agrees to abide by them without reservation.
