Our young
patrons, from infants to older elementary school-aged
children, will enjoy a multitude of fun and educational
experiences at the library. In the children’s room there
are books, magazines, audio books, CDs and CD-ROMs. There
are also recreational and educational DVDs. Children’s
reference librarians assist youngsters with all their
informational and recreational needs. The children’s room
has a computer area where children may play educational and
recreational games. The computers provide access to the
Internet as well as word processing programs and online
databases.
We have a
designated tween area set up for children in grades five and
six. With comfortable seating, a selection of age
appropriate books and their own computer they can find what
they need Be “tween” fifth and sixth.
We offer a
year-round programming schedule. These activities include
storytimes, movement programs, musical programs, crafts, workshops and book discussions. Special shows
are planned when school is not in session. To foster a love
of reading in children from the very young to our tweens we
offer programs for summer reading and book buddies. Class
and nursery school visits may be arranged by calling the
children’s department at 935-6790 for space and staff
availability.

baby's birth certificate or birth announcement to the
children’s room and you will receive a lightweight canvas
bag filled with a baby book, growth chart and information on
reading to your child.
POLICY FOR
UNATTENDED CHILDREN
A practice has
developed whereby children are left at the library
unaccompanied by a responsible older person. Unattended
children often become disruptive to other patrons using the
library. For the general welfare of all persons using the
library, and the safety of children, the following standards
have been adopted by the Library Board of Trustees
- It is not the library’s
function to offer childcare. The library will contact
the Nassau County Police if underage children are left
unattended in the library.
- All children in grade 2 or
younger, shall at all times, be attended and adequately
supervised by a responsible person (e.g. an adult or a
mature adolescent age 16 or older.)
- Children in grades 3 though 5
may use the children’s room when unaccompanied, provided
that a responsible person, age 14 or older, remains in
the library building.
- Preschool children through
children in grade 6 are limited to using the computers
located in the children’s area. When using the
computers, children in grade 2 and lower must, at all
times, have an adult sitting with them in the computer
area.
- Parents, not library staff,
are responsible for children’s behavior in the library.
Children deemed out of control or disruptive to patrons
or library staff will be asked to leave.
