Program Description

Description

Ladybird Johnson, Patricia Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan with Marilyn Carminio.

The Constitution does not outline responsibilities for the First Lady of the United States. This challenging role is sometimes described as the most demanding volunteer job in America. These remarkable women are wives, mothers and confidants to the most powerful person in the world, and occupy their own place on the international stage. Although not elected, they are often subject to intense public scrutiny.  This multimedia lecture will highlight the personal side of life in the White House and the unique contributions each of these women have made to the nation.
