Sidney Poitier is the first African-American to win the Academy Award as Best Actor. He rose from an impoverished upbringing in the Bahamas to a successful performer. His diplomatic service includes being Bahamian ambassador to Japan and UNESCO. Poitier was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
