Program Description

Description

In 1943 Jackson Pollock created what would be his largest painting, Mural, recognized as a critical moment in the development of his artistic style. He had not yet begun to pour and drop paint onto canvases and Abstract Expressionism had not yet evolved from the New York school. Incorporating the Surrealists' exploration of the unconscious mind, the physical, emotional and powerful works of the Mexican muralists and his mentor Thomas Hart Benton's thematic considerations to murals, Pollock began to challenge traditional notions of painting. Thomas Germano will present a virtual and remote lecture contextualizing Pollock's Mural by placing it into the narrative of the artists's life and work.

The Guggenheim Museum in NYC will exhibit Mural this fall.
